After a nearly 10 month long independent investigation, the NBA formally announced the results of said investigation and the corresponding punishment for Suns owner Robert Sarver.
The punishment ends speculation that the NBA would seek to change ownership in Phoenix, surprising some.
Why didn't the NBA force a sale of the franchise, a la Donald Sterling and the Clippers?
More than likely its due to the lack of a "smoking gun" video or audio file that would've brought the case to a whole different level. As it stands, while many members of the organization spoke with the lawyers conducting the investigation, it still boils down to their word against Sarver's.
The other reason the NBA likely avoided a forced sale is the precedent it would set for other ownership groups. If a team could be taken away from an owner based on allegations made by team employees, it would likely create a problem for the NBA on a much, much larger scale.
As it stands now, Sarver will be back running the show in 2023.
