Before we get to the fun speculation let’s recap James Jones busy NBA Draft day. We began Thursday afternoon with the trade of scorer TJ Warren & the 32nd overall pick to the Pacers for cash considerations. Warren has over $30 Million left on his contract over the next three seasons that the Suns now have off the books. James Jones didn't stop there.
Prior to the draft getting underway the Suns surprisingly traded their sixth overall pick and the possibility of drafting a point guard of the future to Minnesota for the 11th overall pick and forward Darío Šarić.
Then the draft began and the Suns used that 11th overall pick on 23 year old forward and three point sharp shooter from North Carolina Cam Johnson. Johnson was mostly predicted as a late 1st round pick and Suns fans were not too happy with the selection if you follow Suns twitter.
Before the night was over two more names were added to the 2019 roster. The Suns acquired the 24th overall pick and Center Aron Baynes From the Celtics in exchange for a 2020 first rounder that was originally a Milwaukee pick. That 24th pick was used on National Champion point guard for Virginia Ty Jerome.
How does all mean that D‘Angelo Russell will be a Phoenix Sun? Let’s look at some evidence.
- The Suns were clearly trying to clear space with the trade of T.J Warren
- The Suns would not have traded out of the sixth pick and a viable PG of the future in Coby White or Jarrett Culver
- There are some social media clues where we can connect dots
For example…. Which NBA team has Halloween colors?
Why would Michael Thomas tweet and then delete this…
Plus the Suns just happened to change their Twitter icon to colors featuring black and orange.
It all sounds crazy that an all-star point guard would choose to play in Phoenix and play for a team that won 19 games but why else would the Suns have made the moves they did on Thursday if they didn’t have someone up their sleeve?
